General Surgery Residency

We offer a five year, non-pyramidal general surgical residency training program, approved for 63 resident positions and to graduate eight chief residents in general surgery each year. The internship has twenty-four positions: eight categorical general surgery residents and sixteen preliminary positions in general surgery for individuals preparing for a residency in another discipline. There are also preliminary positions available for a second clinical year of surgical training. Approximately half of our categorical residents elect to spend two years in the Department's NIH-funded surgical research laboratories. Approximately 60% of our graduates continue their training in fellowship programs or embark on academic careers.

With the requirements of the Residency Review Committee and the American Board of Surgery, we provide a broad, well-balanced surgical experience that can be adjusted to the career goals of individual residents. Every effort is made to assure that each resident receives a uniform experience to fulfill the specific requirements of the American Board of Surgery.
