University of Colorado Hospital
The University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) is the region's leading specialty care and referral center. It is located at the state-of-the-art Anschutz Centers for Advanced Medicine. The Outpatient and Cancer Pavilions focus on primary and specialized outpatient care. The inpatient facility offiers cutting edge medical care in all specialties.
Rotations for general surgery residents at University Hospital are in general, vascular, cardiothoracic, hand, plastic and reconstructive, burn, transplant, and trauma surgery; as well as anesthesia, surgical intensive care, neurosurgery, orthopedics, urologic surgery and emergency medicine.
Denver Health Medical Center
Denver Health Medical Center is a 360-bed acute care hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center providing the 911 emergency medical system for the City and County of Denver, as well as a network of neighborhood clinics for the medically indigent. As a Level 1 Trauma Center in collaboration with the University of Colorado Hospital, Denver Health serves as the Rocky Mountain Region Trauma Center for Colorado and the surrounding regions. Denver Health offers major teaching and academic opportunities in the areas of trauma management, surgical critical care, and treatment of common emergent surgical problems.
Approximately 4,500 operations are performed annually by members of the Department of Surgery; 3,500 patients are admitted for trauma.
Rotations for general surgery residents are offered in general and plastic surgery, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, urology and orthopedic surgery.
Veterans Administration Medical Center
The surgical service of the Denver Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) includes sections of GI, tumor and endocrine; vascular, cardiothoracic, urology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, podiatry, and hand surgery.
The hospital facility has 166 operating beds. Staff members serve on a part-time basis, each member having a faculty appointment at the School of Medicine. Residents assume significant responsibility for patient care under the supervision of staff surgeons.
Research during the past few years has centered upon nutritional studies in cancer patients, endothelial repopulation of vascular grafts, proteolytic effect of plasma for septic cancer and AIDS patients, disorders of the foot, mitral valve disease, reflux esophagitis, outcomes research in the area of health services and development, the effects of processes and structures of health care delivery and high risk coronary artery patients.
Cardiac Surgery participates in a VA Cooperative Study involving a multicenter randomized trial for on-pump versus off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery. The Vascular Service participates in a cooperative study of aortic aneurysms, with respect to natural history and standard "open" surgical repair versus endovascular repair. In addition, the vascular, cardiology, and cardiac surgery services are comparing interventional versus conservative therapy in patients with coronary artery disease in association with their vascular disease.
Over 3,100 operations are performed annually; most are major procedures involving relatively high-risk patients.
The Children’s Hospital
Founded in 1908, The Children’s Hospital is a 199-bed facility serving a 13-state region, and is the only resource in a six-state region with the comprehensive array of specialized services very sick children need. Pediatric surgical services housed at Children's include cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, urology, transplant surgery, burn surgery, and trauma. The hospital averages 10,000 inpatient admissions and nearly 7,800 surgical procedures per year. The Children's Hospital is designated as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center.
Rose Medical Center
Rose Medical Center is an established teaching service and provides surgical experience in a private practice setting. Residents assume care for private patients in general, thoracic and vascular surgery, as well as surgical oncology.
St. Joseph Hospital
St. Joseph Hospital is a private general hospital within the Kaiser-Permanente system which provides residents in their third and fourth years with experience on a busy surgical service.
