General Residency Research
Each year, several residents elect a basic laboratory experience in surgical investigation. Residents interested in pursuing a career in academic surgery are encouraged to undertake a research experience. Research is usually done following the third clinical year and prior to beginning the fourth clinical year. The optimal time to assimilate the discipline of surgical investigation is two years. The research resident has no clinical responsibilities during this period. The research area and mentors are matched to the interests of the individual resident.
