Four members of the UCD Police Department recently traded their uniforms for
serving aprons at two Aurora restaurants in order to raise funds for Special
Olympics Colorado.

Police Dispatchers Betty Clark and Rosemary Najera, Sergeant John Hughes
and Chief of Police Doug Abraham served up special attention to diners with
a side order of fund raising at Red Robin and Texas Roadhouse. More than $5,200
in “tips” was collected during the two Tip-a-Cop events.
Special Olympics athletes were there to lend a hand, as well as officers from
the Aurora Police Department.
Proceeds from the Tip-a-Cop events benefit Special Olympics Colorado. In addition,
the Denver Broncos Charities Fund, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation,
matched a percentage of the donations.
“ You should put your hands back into the community,” said Najera,
who has been a Tip-a-Cop volunteer three times. “Anytime you can be involved
in your community, it makes the community better.”
This was Sergeant Hughes’ first time as a Tip-a-Cop volunteer and it was
such a rewarding experience he plans to do it again. “Watching the athletes
count their money and being so excited about the program was touching and inspiring,” he
said.
Clark has volunteered for Tip-a-Cop twice and has participated in Colorado’s
Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics. “I just like helping
the cause,” she said. “I worked so hard, my feet fell off and waited
for me at home.”
Chief Abraham has been director of Colorado’s LETR for seven years and
has participated in numerous Tip-a-Cop events and Torch Runs. “No matter
how big the world is, it gets small when you share your story with others,” said
Abraham.

Cancer and Aging Pilot Research Program
Do you do cancer research that could be applicable to aging issues?
Do you do aging research that could be applicable to cancer issues?
The NCI, the NIA and the Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Center are supporting
a new pilot program in cancer and aging. Pilot studies may be basic or clinical
but should have clinical relevance. Applicants must emphasize in their proposal
how their study relates to aging and cancer in order to be eligible for consideration
for these funds. In addition, it should be made clear how the pilot work will
lead to extramural funding.
Funds can provide salary support for the principal investigator, co-investigators
and/or research technicians involved in the project, and/or laboratory or clinical
expenses related to the project. Aging and cancer pilot awards may be for $10,000
(fellowships), $20,000 (seed grant) or $50,000 (collaborative translational
grant).
Awards will be made for one year, beginning Feb. 1, 2006, or later. Applicants
may indicate how a second year of funding would be utilized.
Guidelines and application forms are available under “Funding Opportunities” in
the “Research” menu on the UCCC website (www.uccc.info)
or by e-mail request to connie.bair@uchsc.edu.
For questions concerning appropriateness of pilot applications for these awards
contact: tim.byers@uchsc.edu or robert.schwartz@uchsc.edu.
Application deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, (electronic submission plus
one hard copy).

Roll Up Your Sleeves -- Blood Donations Needed
Every three seconds someone needs a blood transfusion but less then 5 percent
of the population donates.
This is a statistic that you can help change with just one blood donation.
The Blood Donor Center would like to encourage everyone to roll up their sleeves
and show their support for the patients at the University of Colorado Hospital
As a reminder, all University of Colorado Hospital employees can donate during
working hours as long as there is coverage for your position. Also, we are still
giving out a T-shirt or travel mug to anyone who donates.
The donor center on the Ninth Avenue campus is located in the basement of
the Critical Care Tower, room CC027 and is open Monday through Thursday. The
new donor center at Fitzsimons is open Tuesday through Thursday and is located
in the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion, room 2005.
If you would like to donate or have any questions about donating please contact
the donor center at 303-372-0494 or via email at donorcenter@uch.edu.
