Don’t be a victim after dark
Now that we are no longer on day light savings time, it gets dark earlier. Here are a few things that are worth remembering:
Be aware of your surroundings.
Stay in areas that are well lit.
Travel in numbers. Bad guys do not like being outnumbered
Listen to your sixth sense. If you feel uncomfortable about an area or a person, avoid it.
Be attentive. Walking with headphones on, with a cell phone in use, etc tells attackers that you are not paying full attention to your surroundings.
Have your keys ready when you approach your car. Look around, in and under your vehicle before entering.
Keep your hands free. Use a back pack or book bag.
Whistles or pepper spray should be ready for use, not tucked away in a bag, pocket or purse.
Be familiar with the locations of the Blue Light Emergency phones throughout the campuses.
Preprogram your cell phone with an easy speed dial number for 303-724-4444. This is the University Police Communication Center. If you dial 911 from your cell phone, you will get another jurisdiction which will delay our response time till they can transfer the call to us. This is the limitation of a cell phone.
Be aware of where you park your vehicle in the morning. Is this a place you want to return to in the dark?
As a service for your safety, the University Police Department will escort you to your vehicle or residence (if near the campus). Simply call 303-724-4444.
Want to learn self defense strategies and techniques? The University Police Department is offering a Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) course on December 3 and 4 for women. We hope to offer a course for men in the near future. The cost is only $25. Please contact Officer Lynn Whitten at 303-724-0739 to sign up.
Interested in a lunch time safety education presentation? Having a meeting that we can attend for a few minutes to discuss any campus law enforcement issue? Just contact Officer Whitten.
The University Police Department provides 24 hour a day, seven day a week police and guard protection to our campuses. Please contact us with any concerns or requests. Our main number is 303-724-2000.
