| The historic Eisenhower suite in Building 500 at Fitzsimons. |
While vacationing in Colorado, President Dwight D. Eisenhower suffered a heart attack on September 24, 1955. He was taken to the hospital at the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora.
That building is now historic Building 500 of the University of Colorado Denver’s Fitzsimons campus in Aurora. Most of the building has been renovated into offices for administrative functions of the University of Colorado Denver and University of Colorado Hospital. However, thanks to a grant from the Colorado Historical Society, the eighth floor hospital suite where Eisenhower recuperated for seven weeks has been resorted to its 1955 appearance – complete with china, a phonograph and a standing ashtray!
The University of Colorado Hospital is currently looking for volunteers to guide tours of the historic Eisenhower suite.
Free tours are conducted every Wednesday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. For more information on small group tours or to volunteer call Deb Peek at 720-848-4070
