Vision becomes reality as final
phase of planned construction begins

What is fast becoming one of the newest and most modern medical research and patient care centers in the country will soon get even bigger and better.

The University of Colorado Denver held a commemorative groundbreaking ceremony on April 10 to mark the beginning of the final phase of planned construction at the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora. Seven new educational buildings – including a new library and classroom facilities – began construction this month as part of efforts to complete the vision of a premier research, academic and patient care center in Colorado.

Roy Wilson named new UCD chancellor
The University of Colorado Board of Regents unanimously voted on the president’s recommendation to name M. Roy Wilson, MD, MS, as the new chancellor for CU’s Denver and Health Sciences Center.

Wilson comes from the four-campus Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, where he has served as president since 2003. He will take the helm July 1 as part of a five-year contract ending June 30, 2011.

Denise Kassebaum appointed dean of the CU School of Dentistry
Denise K. Kassebaum, DDS, MS, will officially take the helm of the University of Colorado School of Dentistry on May 1, focusing her leadership on building a bridge between dentistry and medicine for total patient care.

The CU Board of Regents approved Kassebaum’s appointment April 12 during a regular meeting. Her appointment follows several years of leadership positions in the CU School of Dentistry, including executive associate dean, associate dean for academic affairs and chair of the division of oral diagnosis, oral medicine and oral radiology.

UCD among nation’s top-tier research universities
The University of Colorado Denver is among the nation’s top-tier research universities, according to a revised classification system by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

School of Medicine rises in national rankings
The primary care and pediatrics programs at the University of Colorado School of Medicine have been ranked among the nation’s best, and are listed in the top 10 in their categories in the 2007 edition of graduate school rankings by U.S.News & World Report.

New Chronic Dialysis Unit to open at University of Colorado Hospital
A new outpatient unit for people who need regular dialysis therapy for kidney failure will open in mid-April at University of Colorado Hospital. The unit will be the first of its kind at the hospital and will provide continuity of care from the outpatient to acute care setting.

Grant will provide an undergraduate pre-health program
The Office of Diversity has received a grant for $132,950 from the State of Colorado Office of Health Disparities to provide an Undergraduate Pre-Health Program (UPP). The UPP is modeled after the successful Pre-Collegiate Development Program for high school, first generation and/or ethnic minority students.

Cancer Center joins LIVESTRONG™ Survivorship Center of Excellence Network
The University of Colorado Cancer Center (UCCC) has joined the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) in helping address the needs of the growing number of cancer survivors in the United States through the LIVESTRONG™ Survivorship Center of Excellence Network.
