In mid-December, Colorado went to market with a deal that had been two years
in the making – $192.3 million of certificates of participation that will
finance educational facilities for the University of Colorado Denver at its Fitzsimons campus in Aurora.
School
of Pharmacy Dean Louis Diamond to step down
On Jan 10, UCD interim chancellor, Greg Stiegmann, MD, announced the resignation
of Louis Diamond, PhD, dean of the UCD’s School of Pharmacy. Diamond,
who has led the school since 1986, will leave his position as of Aug. 31 to
return to a faculty position in the school.

On Nov. 29, 2005 UCD School of Medicine Dean, Richard Krugman, MD, gave
the annual State of the School Address.
CU School
of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital
Name New Pediatrics Chair
University of Colorado School of Medicine Dean, Dr. Richard Krugman,
and President and CEO of The Children's Hospital, Dr. Dori Biester, recently
announced the appointment of Dr. Stephen R. Daniels as the L. Joseph Butterfield
Chair of the school's Department of Pediatrics. As the chair of pediatrics,
Daniels will also serve as the pediatrician-in-chief at The Children's Hospital.
His appointment is effective March 1, 2006.
University
of Colorado Hospital Partners
with Sterling Regional MedCenter
The CU School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology and Sterling
Regional MedCenter recently announced a joint venture, in which Joe Bonelli,
MD, PhD, will continue to provide pathology services to SRM as well as serve
as a full-time faculty member in the CU School of Medicine and attending pathologist
at University of Colorado Hospital.

method of treatment for advanced
ovarian cancer announced
The National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health,
recently issued an announcement encouraging treatment with anti-cancer drugs
via two post-surgery methods for women with advanced ovarian cancer. The combined
methods, which deliver drugs into a vein and directly into the abdomen, extend
by about a year overall survival for women with advanced ovarian cancer.

uncover the role of a gene linked to Parkinson’s Disease
Researchers at the University of Colorado Denver’s
School of Medicine have uncovered how a gene linked to Parkinson’s disease
can keep brain cells alive. The results suggest the possibility for new drugs
that might regulate the gene and protect Parkinson’s patients from further
cell damage.

link CO2 levels in the brain to seizures and chronic fatigue
Researchers at the University of Colorado Denver
have discovered how carbon dioxide (CO2) affects excitability levels in the
brain – levels that could cause epileptic seizures – or could put
you to sleep.

When we watch death scenes in movies or on TV, they are often brutal and horrific.
Do most of us even flinch or think twice about what we have just seen? According
to Daniel Johnson, MD, chief of the Palliative Care Department at Kaiser Permanente,
it seems that not many viewers are fazed by the horrors of people dying in the
films.

Redevelopment Authority welcomes DMI BioSciences as first tenant in Bioscience
East building at Fitzsimons
The Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority (FRA) recently announced
that it has signed a lease with DMI BioSciences, making it the
first tenant of Bioscience East, a newly renovated 25,000 square-foot
building in the bioscience park at Fitzsimons. DMI plans to occupy
almost 15,000 square feet of Bioscience East on May 1, 2006.
Major
new fund aimed to increase diversity at CU
In December 2005, University of Colorado President Hank
Brown announced a $1 million gift from the Pioneer Fund of Denver,
made possible by Helen McLoraine, for the purpose of creating a
scholarship program for diverse and historically underrepresented
students at the University.
