University of Colorado Hospital to commemorate perinatal loss
To honor and remember infants who have died before, during or after birth,
a special service will be held at University of Colorado Hospital for
grieving parents and their families and friends. Each spring, the hospital
holds a perinatal loss memorial service to assist parents who are in mourning
and to help affirm their ongoing lives despite their losses.
Organizers believe the service helps create a positive and supportive
atmosphere for those who have lost infants in recent years.
This year’s service will take place at 1:30 p.m., June 3, in the CU
School of Nursing auditorium at 4200 E. Ninth Ave., on the south side of
the street near the hospital bridge.
A brief reception will follow the commemorative service, which is being
sponsored by the Perinatal Loss Memorial Committee and the Division of Child
Psychiatry. For more information, contact Spiritual Care Services at (303)
372-8540.
Leadership Book Group
The HSC Faculty Women’s Committee, Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee
and the Office of Diversity would like to invite the campus community
to join a new Leadership Book Group.
This group is being created to build collegiality
and to specifically focus on developing leadership potential in individuals
from underrepresented groups (e.g., women, minorities, those with disabilities,
and members of the GLBT community). We would like to stress, however, that
this program is open to anyone who would like to participate. Participants
will read and discuss books on leadership and professional development.
Carol Rumack, MD, will lead the book discussion.
The first book group meeting will be on June 6, on the Ninth Avenue campus,
in the Humphrey’s Lounge at 5:00 pm. RSVP to Vicky Saulsberry at 303-315-8558
or e-mail at Vicky.Saulsberry@uchsc.edu, to ensure that the room will accommodate
all attendees.
The book selected for the inaugural meeting is Tempered Radicals: How
People Use Difference to Inspire Change at Work by Debra E Meyerson. The
Health Science Center campus bookstore has copies available for purchase.
If you cannot read the entire book, focus on chapters 1 (defines what
a tempered radical is), 5 (includes some helpful suggestions on reframing
and negotiating) and 8 (talks about some of the issues to be faced by people
taking this approach).

June 28 is Bike to Work Day
On Wednesday, June 28, thousands of people will leave their cars at home
and take two wheels to work. We're hoping that plenty of UCD/UCH employees
will be among those taking part in Bike to Work Day, an annual event that
educates and excites people about commuting by bicycle.
Why bike to work? It's a great way to get out of traffic, save gas, make
time to exercise and enjoy fresh air. Denver has been rated as one of the
nation's best places to bike by the American League of Bicyclists, and one
of the most congested cities by the Texas Transportation Institute, so bicycle
commuting just makes sense.
Bike to Work Day is a perfect event for novice bicycle commuters, as
plenty of participation means that groups are more likely able to ride together,
and extra support is available for planning routes, tips on best commuting
practices and road safety.
You can also stop by one of more than 100 bike stops that morning to
catch your breath and get some free breakfast.

Feedback on tenure report welcome
On March 24, 2005, the University of Colorado Board of Regents approved
a joint resolution from the president with the support of the faculty
to "conduct
a system-wide review of the processes for awarding and maintaining tenure,
including the processes for awarding tenure at the time of initial appointment
and after a probationary period as well as the processes for post-tenure
review."
Since then, the Advisory Committee on Tenure-Related Processes has spent
more than a year developing and implementing a comprehensive study of
the tenure system. General Howell Estes, III, recently presented his
independent report to the committee.
To view the independent report, go to http://wwwcu.edu/tenurereview/independentreport.html.
Feedback is encouraged.

Yoga instructor program one of a kind
James Ford knew he was on to something about seven years ago, when the popular
yoga classes offered by his department at the Community College of Aurora (CCA)
continued to draw back past students seeking more training in the Eastern exercise.
With so much demand for the upper level yoga classes, Ford, the chair of the
school’s Mind and Body Health department, created a program specifically
designed to train and create yoga instructors.
Six graduating classes and more than a hundred new, nationally certified yoga
instructors later, CCA is still the only public school in the state and one of
the few in the country to offer a yoga instructor program.
The unique CCA yoga instructor program requires 225 classroom and field hours
for completion, and students typically complete their studies during the nine-month
program which goes from August to May. The program focuses on the wide-encompassing
soft classical Hatha yoga style, and its graduates meet the requirements of the
nation’s top yoga certification organizations.
There are several other private companies in the metro area offering yoga instruction
certification, but because CCA is a college receiving state funds, the cost of
its 10-credit program – about $850 – is about a third of the private
programs.
For information about CCA’s soft classical Hatha yoga instructor program,
call Ford at 303-340-7125.
Magazines
needed
Last year the volunteers at University of Colorado Hospital distributed
more than 16,000 donated magazines throughout the hospital and clinics
for patients and visitors to read. Because of the ongoing demand,
there is a
constant need of magazines that are less than six months old.
Please drop off your donations of magazines to the University of
Colorado Hospital, 12605 E. 16th Ave. If you have any questions,
please contact
the Volunteer Services CARE Team at 303-372-8448 or volunteer@uch.edu.
