Employees recognized: Years of service, retirement, employees of the month and diversity
On April 20, a large crowd gathered at the Red Lion Hotel to celebrate
the honored employees of 2005. These employees included the 2005 Employees-of-Month,
retirees of 2005; and those who have been with the Health Sciences Center
for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and even 35 years.
Betsy Rodriguez, assistant vice chancellor, Human Resources, opened
the program by welcoming everyone, and then turned the lectern over to Teresa
Berryman, vice chancellor, Administration and Finance.
“
One of the best parts of this job is recognizing our outstanding
employees,” said Berryman. “I enjoy this event every year as it
gives me an opportunity to thank you for your commitment and hard
work.”
Berryman went on to do what any vice chancellor of finance might
do, and added up the years of service in the room (excluding retirees) – and
came up with 1,225 years. She attributed the dedication to a shared
pride in being part of an institution that is making a difference in the lives
of
Coloradans, and one that has done amazing things in education, research
and clinical care.
Berryman thanked the honorees for ‘choosing’ to be part of the
UCD community, and for doing so in a way that ensures that the
Health Sciences Center continue to grow into a world class institution.
The recognition ceremony began with applauding the committee:
Richard Benson, Human Resources (applauded as the “fearless leader”)
Karen Jackson, Facilities Projects Finance and Administration
Claudette Iacino, CSA Facilities Operations
Jerry Bishop, CSA IT Services
Everlyn Sandoval, School of Medicine, Medical Oncology
Angie Mallo, School of Pharmacy
Sponsors of the event included Public Service Credit Union, the Public
Employees Retirement Association and 24 Hour Fitness.
Employees being recognized went to the stage as their name was called,
to receive a certificate - and many, many pictures were taken! Each also received
a gift, which they had chosen prior to the event, based on their award.
Assisting with the presentation of the certificates:
Dr. Jay Gershen, executive vice chancellor, Office of the Chancellor
Teresa Berryman, vice chancellor, Administration and Finance

Downtown Denver Campus

in a special way. These two were also recognized in a special program
on April 21 – as the recipients of the 2006 Diversity Awards.

2006 DIVERSITY AWARDS
The Diversity Award is in recognition of extraordinary efforts
to recruit and retain diverse faculty, students and staff, in curriculum
innovation,
in research, in practice, and/or in promoting a more respectful civil
community that honors and respects diversity.
Michelyn Lintz
Lintz has been a member of the University of Colorado family since
1973. She has been an administrator in the School of Medicine for
the last eighteen years, and has been the Administrator for the Department
of Pharmacology
for the last twelve years. Prior to that time, she was a grants and
contract officer, a student loan officer, and an admissions receptionist
at the downtown
campus.
For many years Ms. Lintz has been active in promoting diversity.
She has served on the School of Medicine Dean’s Diversity Board since
2001.
She and the Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology have actively
promoted diversity and supported Oyate, a campus-wide group of students,
faculty and staff from all University of Colorado schools who support
diversity on
campus (Oyate means “family” in the Sioux language). Recently
she has actively built “pipelines” from the downtown campus, Metropolitan
State College, and UCB to encourage students from different backgrounds
to consider a career in biomedical science and/or health sciences.
In the midst
of her ever-busy schedule last fall, Ms. Lintz, with the assistance
of the Department of Pharmacology staff and under the principal investigator,
Dr.
Nancy Zahniser, was instrumental in writing, submitting and receiving
a grant for undergraduate under-represented minority students. The
resulting program
will allow students to participate in a ten-week paid fellowship
during which they will receive training and experience in a research
laboratory within
the Department of Pharmacology.
Sgt. Kelly Casias
Sgt. Casias began his law enforcement career in 1983 with the Auraria
Police Department. He rose through the ranks to the position of sergeant.
In 1987 he transferred to the University of Colorado Denver police department where he served both as a patrol sergeant
and as a lieutenant
in charge of field operations at the Fitzsimons campus. Sgt. Casias
is a 2002 graduate of the FBI National Academy. He is currently in
charge of training
for the University Police Department and is active in the FBI National
Academy Alumni Association.
Additionally Sgt. Casias is a member of the International Association
of Chiefs of Police, Urban Area Security Initiative Training Committee,
Community College of Aurora Criminal Justice Advisory Board, The
National Latino Law
Enforcement Officer's Association, the National Latino Peace Officers
Association, and the Colorado Colfax Marathon Team for Colorado Kids.
He is also Chairman
and founder of the HSC Latino Staff and Faculty Association. Sgt
Casias is being recognized for founding the HSC Latino Staff and
Faculty Association.
“ Helen is very customer oriented, and she does a great job at the Fitzsimons
Mail Center. I will miss her very much when she retires at the end of this month.” – Nick
Carranco, manager, UCD Mail Center.
“ Just this last year, Cathy was faced with the challenge of the consolidation
of HSC and UCD. A decision to add the Downtown Denver campus into the HSC campus
directory was made very late in the year and Cathy still kept distribution on
schedule -- and within budget. This required incorporating an additional 2,000
entries from the DDC into the directory.” – Rob Lee, manager, Telecom
Operations, UCD IT Services
“ In concert with her incredible writing skills and talent, she is a joy
to work with. She is upbeat, creative and is constantly coming up with new story
ideas -- or new and improved ways to do almost everything!” – Mitzi
Schindler, director, Publications and Fitzsimons Communications, Office of Public
Relations
