Cops on Doughnut Shops helps worthy cause
Starting at 6 a.m. on May 5, University of Colorado Denver police officer Mark Battle and other officers kicked off a 60-hour Special Olympics Colorado fund-raising sojourn on top of four Krispy Kreme doughnut shops around the state.

NIH launches clinical studies nationwide
to investigate rare diseases

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is launching the first clinical studies of its Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN). More than 20 studies are expected to open in the next few months at about 50 sites across the United States – including Colorado – and in several other countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan, and Brazil. Three University of Colorado School of Medicine/The Children’s Hospital doctors are among the principal investigators in the network.

New initiative aims to eradicate major effects
associated with Down Syndrome

The Anna and John J. Sie Foundation, in conjunction with the University of Colorado, have awarded $1 million to 13 grant recipients to stimulate new scientific research on Down syndrome with the bold aim of eliminating the major effects of Trisomy-21.

Antiviral Drugs May Help Relieve
Nerve Pain Related to Shingles

A small trial suggests that treatment with intravenous and oral antiviral medications may reduce the nerve pain that occurs following shingles, according to a study posted online that will appear in the July 2006 print issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Ribbon cut for Fitzsimons Parkway
The Fitzsimons Parkway made its official debut with ribbon-cutting ceremonies April 17, opening to development another 200 acres north of the Health Sciences Center campus. The parkway is expected to be completely open to traffic in May, with an estimated 25,000 cars passing along its length every day.

UCH evaluating alternative to open-heart surgery
The University of Colorado Hospital is participating in a Phase II clinical study, evaluating a new percutaneous heart valve repair system to treat patients with mitral regurgitation (MR), the most common type of heart valve insufficiency. UCH is one of approximately 30 medical centers in North America that has been selected to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of this non-surgical procedure as part of the prospective, randomized, controlled, multi-center study called EVEREST II (Endovascular Valve Edge-to-Edge REpair STudy).

Employees recognized: Years of service, retirement, employees of the month and diversity
On April 20, a large crowd gathered at the Red Lion Hotel to celebrate the honored employees of 2005. These employees included the 2005 Employees-of-Month, retirees of 2005; and those who have been with the Health Sciences Center for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and even 35 years.

Tanning ads commonly seen in high school newspapers
A small study found that nearly half of high schools in the Denver area contained tanning advertisements in their newspapers, according to an article in the April issue of Archives of Dermatology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
