The officers, representing the Colorado Law Enforcement Torch Run®, were attempting to raise at least $40,000 for Special Olympics Colorado by sitting atop Krispy Kreme shops in Aurora, Thornton, Lone Tree and Grand Junction.
UCD’s own Battle took to the roof of the Krispy Kreme shop located at 15297 E. Mississippi Ave., where he ate, slept, ‘hung out’ and interacted with customers and donors, encouraging them to support the effort, which is part of a national initiative called Cops on Doughnut Shops.
Other UCD University Police involved in the project included Chief of Police Doug Abraham, Officer Richard Bourie, Sgt. Kelly Casias, police dispatcher Betty Clark, Carol Djekic with the ID/Access Badging Office, Officer Steve Emerson, Officer Jim Farrell, and Sgt. John Hughes who arranged the schedule for the “stake out.” More than $5,600 was raised at the Aurora location.
Officer Battle’s big-hearted stint ended at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 7 – he was ready to sleep in his own bed.
Special Olympics Colorado strives to change lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities. The organization has created a model community that celebrates people’s diverse gifts through year-round sports training and athletic competitions and other related programming for more than 8,000 children and adults.
