$10 Million Gift from ALSAM Foundation to support
construction of new pharmacy
building at Fitzsimons
Louis Diamond, PhD, dean of the University of Colorado Denver School of Pharmacy, announced today that the school will
receive a $10 million gift from The ALSAM Foundation, a Utah Trust, to
assist with the construction of a new, 105,000 sq. ft. building to be located
on the Fitzsimons campus of the UCD.

The University of Colorado Cord Blood Bank (UCCBB) has been awarded $1 million
in federal funding by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
to assist in establishing a national cord blood inventory of 150,000 cord blood
units.

James Shmerling, DHA, has been named president and CEO of The Children’s
Hospital, succeeding Dori Biester, PhD, RN, who will retire at the end of 2006,
after a distinguished career with the organization.
Heavy,
chronic drinking can cause
significant hippocampal tissue loss
The hippocampus, a brain structure vital to learning and memory, also appears
vulnerable to damage from chronic, heavy alcohol consumption. A study of alcohol’s
effects on the hippocampus has found that heavy drinking can reduce total hippocampus
volume, which likely reflects a loss of hippocampal tissue substance. The results
of the study are published in the November issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental
Research.

Anthony DeFurio has been appointed senior vice president for finance and chief
financial officer for the University of Colorado Hospital, effective Dec. 2.
Currently, he serves as chief financial officer at the University of Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics – a 760 plus-bed regional academic medical center, and one
of the nation's largest university-owned teaching hospitals

pulmonary hypertension in children
A new, multimillion-dollar grant awarded to the University of Colorado by the
National Institutes of Health for the study of pulmonary hypertension in children
will include the creation of 200 patient-specific computer models that will
be used to help refine diagnosis and improve treatment of the life-threatening
disease.
