Center for Bioethics & Humanities
to host conference on end of life issues
The Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado Denver will host a conference titled, “Dying in America:
The Realities of Choice and Control.” The conference will cover the issues
of decision-making at the end of life from statistical, historical, legal, medical,
and philosophical standpoints.
Colorado tobacco taxes fund colon cancer detection
program
The Colorado Colorectal Screening Program recently received a $3 million grant
to provide colon cancer screenings for uninsured legal residents of Colorado.
The funding comes from tax increases on tobacco products.
7Everyday Hero Kathy Winn cares for infants

in their community through a program called 7Everyday Hero. Kathryn Winn, a volunteer
at Fort Logan Baby Haven, was named the 7Everyday Hero for the week of Oct. 1.
Study finds
one in 523 children and adolescents have diabetes
About one in every 523 children and adolescents in the United States had physician-diagnosed
diabetes in 2001, according to estimates from a major national study called SEARCH
for Diabetes in Youth.
Care transitions intervention reduces medical bills
Patients who require treatment in multiple sites of care may now be able to reduce
their hospital bills and rates of re-hospitalization, according to a study published
in the Sept. 25 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
The trial was led by Eric Coleman, MD, an associate professor at
the University of Colorado Denver’s
School of Medicine, and conducted through its Division of Health
Care Policy.

with certain genes have a 90 percent risk of developing breast and/or
ovarian cancer
During September, Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, the University of Colorado
Cancer Center at the University of Colorado Denver
is joining with the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) to educate women about
familial breast-ovarian cancer syndrome.
Ombuds
Office handles problems
The Ombuds Office was created to provide alternative dispute resolution for
the UCD community. Rather than having to file a formal grievance for every
misunderstanding, miscommunication, or misinterpretation of a policy or procedure,
an ombudsperson can assist individuals in exploring options and alternatives
in an informal manner.

diabetes genetic risk higher than previous estimates
A discovery at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes has identified
a genetic risk for type 1 diabetes three to four times higher than previously
thought possible.
