Ombuds Office handles problems
The Ombuds Office was created to provide alternative dispute resolution for the UCD community. Rather than having to file a formal grievance for every misunderstanding, miscommunication, or misinterpretation of a policy or procedure, an ombudsperson can assist individuals in exploring options and alternatives in an informal manner.
The primary goal of the Ombuds Office is to ensure that all members of the UCD community receive fair and equitable treatment.
The office provides a neutral, confidential, and informal resource. The identities of individuals who visit or contact the office are not revealed, nor does the office become advocates for visitors. Instead, the office is an advocate for fair process.
All communications with the Ombuds Office are privileged, and others cannot waive this privilege. The only exceptions to this policy are cases of imminent harm, in which it is believed that harm may befall an individual.
Staff of the Ombuds Office can help with the following issues:
• Interpersonal conflicts
• Disagreement over grades
• Disciplinary actions
• Sexual harassment
• Discrimination issues
• Working conditions
• Conflict resolution training
Because the structure of the Ombuds Office is informal, it operates outside the formal review, grievance, or appeal process. Assistance is given to help visitors determine what their goals are.
Staff of the Ombuds Office can provide the following services:
• Facilitating
• Listening
• Advising
