Art in Science | Science in Art
exhibit showcases creativity at CU
Art in Science | Science in Art is a juried exhibition of images made by University of Colorado-affiliated scientists and artists. Of the hundreds submitted, 30 were selected to be printed in large format and hung in a traveling show which opens January 2007 at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.
These and an additional 36 will be available in a Web gallery at http://ArtSci.uchsc.edu, went on-line Christmas Eve 2006.
Art and science are often considered to be opposite extremes, with little in common, hardly any communication, and sometimes antagonism. But there is a growing movement among artists to not just use the latest technology (lasers, computer painting, etc.) but to illustrate scientific principles in their art. Scientists make images of the world at scales from the atomic to the cosmic; and some of these images are not just conceptually fascinating but visually stunning. Both types of work were solicited from faculty, staff, and students at CU and its affiliates. Surprisingly, images were submitted that could be art, or science, or both.
Art in Science | Science in Art is organized by Helen MacFarlane, MA, medical illustrator, and J. John Cohen, MD, PhD, immunologist, from the University of Colorado Denver’s School of Medicine.
The works were submitted online as computer files and sent, with the entrants’ names removed for impartiality, to a panel of judges including faculty, staff, and students from all CU campuses, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, University of Arizona, and Johns Hopkins University.
The high quality of submissions made the choice difficult and the on-line show’s size was doubled to accommodate more superb images.
Art in Science | Science in Art: the traveling exhibit will be on display at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science from Jan. 19 following an opening reception and prize award ceremony on the evening of Jan. 18. It will hang there until mid-May and then move to the University of Colorado’s Given Institute in Aspen for the summer.
