Leadership Book Group extends
invitation for all to participate
The Leadership Book Group will meet Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 4:30 p.m., in the
UCD Bookstore on the Ninth Ave. Campus.
The book selected is The Power of Focus by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen,
and Leslie Hewitt. (A brief synopsis of the book is below.)
The Health Sciences Center campus bookstore has agreed to have copies of
the book available for purchase and will send the book directly to you,
if needed.
The list price for the book is $12.95, but the bookstore is discounting
them to $11.65. Although the book can be purchased from other venders,
it is asked
that you make your purchase though the campus bookstore. The bookstore
has graciously agreed to provide snacks and refreshments for the meetings.
The Leadership Book Group was created to build collegiality and to specifically
focus on developing leadership potential in individuals from underrepresented
groups (e.g., women, minorities, those with disabilities, and members of
the GLBT community), although this program is open to anyone who would
like to
participate.
Participants will read and discuss books on leadership and professional
development. The Leadership Book Group meets on the first Tuesday of every
other month.
The Leadership Book Group is sponsored by the HSC Faculty Women’s Committee,
Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee, HSC GLBTI Friends and Allies Committee and
the Office of Diversity.
Please bring ideas for the next book selection for the April 3 meeting.
RSVP to Vicky Saulsberry at 303-315-8558 or email at Vicky.Saulsberry@uchsc.edu to ensure that the room will accommodate all attendees.
The Power of Focus book description
Whether they are corporate professionals, budding entrepreneurs, or they
own a home business, most people are looking to achieve more in less time,
while
earning enough money to live comfortably. This book reveals the proven
techniques thousands of people have used to attain all of the money they
wanted while
living healthy, happy and balanced lives.
The Power of Focus, the new blockbuster from the coauthors of the bestselling
Chicken Soup for the Soul, is a practical no-nonsense guide that shows
readers how to reach their business, personal and financial goals without
getting
burned out in the process. Canfield, Hansen, and Hewitt have taken the
best ideas
from their own successful careers (79 years of combined business expertise),
and distilled them into 10 powerful focusing principles. The result is
a treasury of insights that is enjoyable to read and easy to understand.
At the outset, the book identifies the three most important fundamentals
for consistent success: developing unusual clarity; understanding that
habits determine
your future; and using a "no exceptions policy" approach to focus
on what you want. Numerous anecdotes and inspiring stories help to reinforce
each principle. This is a must-read for business people, sales managers, entrepreneurs,
and anyone who is serious about improving their personal awareness.

of tenure-line faculty, will spend Thursday, February 8, 2007 with faculty,

Dr. Trower currently leads Harvard’s Collaborative on Academic Careers
in Higher Education (COACHE). The COACHE survey of 4,500 tenure-track faculty
at 51 colleges and universities has revealed that, overall, climate, culture,
and collegiality are more important to the success and satisfaction of
early career faculty than compensation, tenure clarity, workload, and policy
effectiveness.
COACHE discovered that the some of the key climate variables for junior
faculty include: interest senior faculty take in their work, fairness with
which
they are evaluated, opportunities to collaborate with senior faculty, how
well they
seem to fit in their departments, sufficient professional and personal
interaction with colleagues, and a sense of community in the department.
Ninth Ave. Campus

office at the Ninth Ave. Campus. Beginning Jan. 2, the badging office

This decision has been in part due to the drop in demand for badging
at the Ninth Ave. Campus location. For your convenience, appointments
are
encouraged
and can be made by calling (303) 724-0399. The e-mail address is IDAccess.Badges@UCHSC.edu.
