UCD at the 2007 National Western Stock Show
The University of Colorado Denver has two exhibits at the 2007 National Western Stock Show, Jan. 6-16.

The UCD exhibits at the National Western Stock Show.

These exhibits provide an opportunity for UCD to showcase its education, research and clinical work to more than 600,000 people from all over the country. They also offer a forum for future health care providers to interact with students--from third grade to high school to college-- in order to inform them about the vast array of health career and educational opportunities.

One of the exhibits is focused on education and research work, and the other provides a health-fair type program with blood-pressure checks, lipid testing, and health education materials.

The exhibit is open from 9am -8pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-9pm Friday-Sunday, during the Stock Show.

Stock Show Foundation provides rural scholarship
Each year, The National Western Stock Show Foundation provides a scholarship to a first year medical student committed to rural primary care practice. The scholarship provides $6,000 per year, renewable for 4 years, to a student who has come from a rural community in Colorado or Wyoming and plans to practice in a rural community in Colorado or Wyoming.

“With this scholarship, we can identify exceptional candidates for rural practice and encourage and support their development to become terrific rural doctors for Colorado," said Jack Westfall, MD, UCD associate dean for Rural Health.

First year medical student, J. Ely Walker was awarded the 2006 National Western Stock Show Medical Student Scholarship. Raised in a community of just 600 in Walsh, Colorado, J. Ely Walker credits the influence of his town’s doctor as the reason he entered the medical profession. He is dedicated to returning to practice medicine in a rural community following his medical education.
