Avon Walk for Breast Cancer raises
money for CU Cancer Center
The University of Colorado Cancer Center (UCCC) was given a $750,000 grant as part of the $2.3 million that was raised by last month’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The funding will go towards researching the role of hormones in breast cancer and two community projects, as part of the Avon Foundation Center at UCCC. The community access programs, Survivor Outreach to Latinas (SOL) and CoMadre project, will proved 5,000 women with breast cancer screening.
Nearly 1,100 people participated in this year’s Avon Walk for Breast
Cancer, which was held June 24. Participants had the choice of walking a 26.2
mile marathon or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles). Each participant had
to raise $1,800 to partake in the walk. The two day event started in Washington
Park, with walkers spending the night at Clement Park in Littleton before
returning to Washington Park the following day.The Children’s Treehouse Foundation was also announced as one of the initial grant recipients for the fundraiser. The foundation received $125,000 for furthering education and awareness programs for the children of parents with cancer.
Avon Walks award funds to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations that support organizations dedicated to raising awareness and education, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services, and scientific research, with a focus on the medically underserved.
Donations are still being accepted for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Denver, registration is still open for the walks taking place in San Francisco (July 7-8), Los Angeles (Sept. 15-16), New York (Oct. 6-7), and Charlotte, NC (Oct. 20-21).
