Electronic
in-home device tracks health
of patients with lung disease
The University of Colorado Hospital has a new method for tracking the health
of patients while they are in the comfort of their own homes. With the press
of a button, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) can
report self-monitored information using a system called iCare Health Buddy – a
small electronic device that hooks into telephone systems at home.

environment: Storm water concern
The university community includes students, faculty, medical researchers, staff,
and patients who may not always be aware of their potential impact on the campus
environment, including surrounding areas. Stormwater runoff is one area that
can have a wide impact – on campus and eventually nearby creeks that flow
into the South Platte River.
Study tests
oral insulin to prevent type 1 diabetes
Researchers at the Barbara
Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD) have begun a clinical study of oral insulin
to prevent or delay type 1 diabetes in people at risk for the disease.
Burn
awareness: 43 percent of all burns happen at home
It is estimated that more than one million burn injuries occur every year and
of that, 50 percent could be avoided. Burn Awareness Week, observed the first
full week in February each year, is an opportunity to remind parents and children
about potential hazards that can lead to burns in the home.
UCD
among grant awardees to study
wheelchair transportation safety
The University of Colorado Denver has been named
one of four university partners awarded a five-year, $4.5 million federal grant
to continue research on transportation safety and usability for people who
use wheelchairs.
