Colorado Researchers Succeed in Highly
Competitive and Reduced Grant Environment
UCD research dollars hit a record $374 million for FY 2006
The University of Colorado Denver received a record $374 million in sponsored research grants during fiscal year 2006 -- roughly a 6 percent increase over 2005 -- indicating that the university's researchers are thriving in a highly competitive national quest for public and private research dollars.
"In a time when most universities are facing reductions in funding, expanded compliance requirements and an increased competition for the research dollar, these numbers demonstrate the outstanding success realized by the faculty at the University of Colorado Denver," said UCD Chancellor M. Roy Wilson, MD, MS.
Combined research for the entire University of Colorado system for fiscal year 2006 was $640 million.
With funding from the National Institutes of Health and other public and private entities, UCD faculty are conducting breakthrough research in a variety of disciplines including the fields of medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics, cancer, diabetes, infectious disease, pharmacology, surgery, microbiology, mathematics, education and more.
One-thousand, seven hundred and ninety-nine biomedical and basic science research grants at the University of Colorado Denver made up the bulk of the UCD research funding at $350 million. The total number of awards for the University of Colorado Denver increased by 14 percent and total funding increased by 5 percent compared to fiscal year 2005.
The downtown Denver campus generated 185 awards totaling slightly less than $24 million in funding in fiscal year 2006. Total funding dollars for the downtown Denver campus increased by 26.5 percent while the total number of awards decreased 15 percent.
"Thanks to the diligence of all members of the UCD research community, UCD as a whole continues to make long strides in advancing knowledge," said Wilson. "The standard of excellence our researchers have set and the advances they achieve should be a source of inspiration and pride for the entire community as well as for all Coloradans."
As in the past, NIH grants accounted for a majority of all sponsored research awards for medical researchers during fiscal year 2006, amounting to 56 percent of all grants received. Another 11 percent came from other federal funding resources, and 6 percent came from private medical and scientific associations and foundations. The balance was contributed by hospitals and universities, industry, state and local governments and international funding.
